Project: Contemporary Roma Art Space Association

Empowering Progressive Roma Art and Critical Dialogue

The Contemporary Roma Art Space Association (CRASA), formerly known as Bura Kollektíva, was founded in September 2024 with the mission of supporting progressive Roma contemporary art and fostering critical conversations through artistic expression. Through its work, the association reflects social issues affecting Roma communities, with a particular focus on intersectional marginalisation.

The organisation’s work is closely connected to the Bura Gallery, where in 2023 a progressive new team took over its operation and introduced a fresh concept. Since then, the gallery has rapidly gained professional recognition and community attention. In 2025, CRASA participated in OFF-Biennále Budapest, Hungary’s largest independent contemporary art event.

CRASA’s programmes include exhibitions on Roma and intersectional themes, workshops, community events, and mentorship for emerging Roma and non-Roma artists. Unique in its approach, the organisation is Roma-led, women-centred, and radically critical, rejecting victimhood narratives. Its work integrates activism, and community engagement, creating art that not only inspires but also addresses cultural and political realities.

While committed to artistic and social impact, CRASA recognises the need for long-term financial sustainability. The organisation is actively diversifying its income sources by exploring new fundraising opportunities, forging partnerships across different sectors, and engaging a broader supporter base in order to build a stronger, more resilient organisation.

As part of this journey, the Foundation is supporting CRASA’s participation in the Civil Impact Academy, where the team will gain foundational skills for building their corporate supporter base. The Academy will also offer opportunities to develop a structured service offer, tailored for potential partners — laying the groundwork for sustainable, mutually beneficial collaborations.

Through the partnership, the Foundation aims to empower CRASA to strengthen its financial resilience, deepen its impact, and ensure the continuation of progressive Roma art as a catalyst for dialogue and change.
